It’s named polyhydroxyalkanoate and abbreviated as PHA

I obtained two 1KG spools of PHA from Amazon.com. Just to “give it a try” and satisfy my curiosity about the material. No concern (or knowledge) over brand. Just that it was available.

PHA filament, or polyhydroxyalkanoate filament, is a type of biodegradable plastic made from microorganisms. It is used in 3D printing and is known for its environmental benefits, as it can decompose in various environments, including home compost and marine settings.

It’s also finding use with disposable packaging and other single use items.

Production cost is it’s current major drawback.

Overview of PHA Filament

Key Characteristics

Biodegradability

Natural Decomposition: PHA can decompose in various environments, including:

Home compost – common earth
Marine settings – Oceans, streams, and lakes.

Environmental Safety: Unlike some plastics, PHA does not leave harmful residues, such as microplastics.

Production

Microbial Origin: PHA is created through bacterial fermentation, making it a bio-based polymer.
Sustainable Manufacturing: The production process emphasizes lower carbon footprints and environmental responsibility.

Printing requirements with PHA Filament

Cooling Needs: PHA requires maximum cooling during printing to prevent warping, which is contrary to many other filaments that need heated beds.
Adhesion Techniques: Successful printing often involves using specific adhesives and print bed surfaces to ensure proper adhesion.

PHA filament is very flexible and somewhat soft before printing. Similar to TPU. Not particularly suited to auto switching multi filament 3D printing systems

Performance

Strength and Flexibility: After printing, PHA exhibits strong mechanical properties, making it suitable for various applications, including medical uses and consumer products.

Blends Available: There are PLA-PHA blends that combine the benefits of both materials, offering improved toughness and thermal stability.

Conclusion

PHA filament represents a promising alternative to traditional plastics in 3D printing, combining biodegradability with strong performance characteristics. Its unique properties make it an attractive choice for environmentally conscious consumers and manufacturers.

I have produced the few items shown, Some print settings are a bit unusual. I am still “learning” so no recommendations (yet) from me. Just to say it is certainly very printable material.

It’s drawback will be cost, but even that (for me) is not that big a hurtle. I don’t intend to limit myself to this one product.

If you are a hobby printer like me, purchase a few kilo’s and give it a fair trial.
